American Fable is ambitious, maybe too much so sometimes, but there's an intense pleasure in the boldness of the film's style, its confidence in what it is about. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie. "American Fable" displays its symbols proudly, in the way short stories sometimes do. The symbols don't have the resonance that some of Hamilton's singular images do: Gitty dangling from a rope, surrounded by the dark walls of the silo; children capturing fireflies at night in big jars; a truly spooky.
It's a nice opening for a movie that spirals into nonsense. Everything looks right in place in Anne Hamilton's "American Fable," all measured and ready to go. American Fable is one of those movies that was probably betrayed by its trailers.
People that sought out this movie looking for a horror-fantasy a la Pan's Labyrinth are going to be sorely disappointed (or maybe pleasantly surprised). Fable is a slow movie where not all that much happens. American Fable is a highly ambitious project from writer/director Anne Hamilton and I feel like she captures the dying small American farming family in a unique light. You know, I've been sitting here typing and deleting in a frustrating thought loop when in reality, that's kind of indicative of this film. Anne Hamilton mixes fantasy and naturalism to beautiful yet confounding results. Where American Fable suffers, however, is in its inability to contain its own mysticism.
